TRIFT GLACIER & SUSTEN PASS
July 2017
The hike up to the Trift suspension bridge that overlooks the lake and glacier of the same name is one that I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. It starts off pretty steep, but after that, it’s a wonderful hike up the valley before you reach the breathtaking view after a final incline. I would’ve loved some more neutral light, but it was still amazing up there and the landscape is much more impressive than the photos might suggest. The scale of these mountains is just something else.
The one thing that definitely dampens the mood though is seeing how much the glacier has retreated over the last few years. 10 years ago, it still ended in the lake and 60 years ago, it filled the whole valley where the lake is now up to the bridge. Nowadays, you can just see the small remains of what once used to be. Anyways, we hiked around the place a bit and got some different angles on the scene. Walking along the suspension bridge is quite the experience as well.
On the way home, we took the scenic route across Susten Pass, which is one of my favorite passes in the Alps. At the top, you get a great view of Stein Glacier and its glacial lake across the valley. The clouds finally showed up and made for some really epic and moody conditions. All in all, it was a really nice day in the mountains.
